20 “Hacks” for Your Best New Mexico State Fair Experience

We’re in full prep mode for our much beloved New Mexico State Fair which kicks off on Thursday, September 5. We know a lot of folks also like to prepare and plan, so we’ve compiled a list of our favorite New Mexico State Fair hacks. Here’s the breakdown to help you make the most of your visit:

1. Come See Us on Opening Day September 5th

  • We plan to offer several discounts throughout the run of the fair, with opening day featuring some great deals and opportunities. Admission prices will be just $2 per person with $2 (per ride) ride tickets for all attendees! Experience thrilling rides, amazing fair food and $2 opening day admission! Please make sure to bring cash as the $2 admission is a cash-only perk!

2. Buy Tickets Online

  • For the regular priced admission days, we highly recommend an advance purchase. Advance admission tickets for the 2024 New Mexico State Fair can be purchased online for $15 for adults and $10 for children aged 6-12 and seniors aged 65 and up, reflecting a discount as compared to buying them at the event. The additional substantial benefit of buying admission tickets online is that patrons will have expedited entry without having to wait in line to purchase them at the gates. You can buy tickets online now!

3. If You Prefer Smaller Crowds, Go During Off-Peak Hours

  • Visit on weekdays or early in the morning to avoid large crowds. You'll have shorter lines for rides, food, and exhibits.

4. Check for Discount Days

  • The fair often offers special discounts or free entry for certain public servants (e.g., Military Day, Teacher Day and Law Enforcement Day). If you’re a member of any of these groups, check the schedule in advance to take advantage of these offers.

5. Use Park and Ride on Weekends

  • Parking can be a challenge on the busiest days of the fair, so we highly recommend taking advantage of our new Park and Ride option. Park and Ride will be available on Saturdays and Sundays and provides a convenient option to make getting to the Fair as easy and seamless as possible. P & R facilitates expedited entry into the Fair, allowing patrons direct access to all the fun! Buy tickets now!

6. Download the Fair App

7. Buy Rodeo & Concert Tickets – Cost of Admission is Included!

  • From Josh Turner to Brad Paisley, and everything in between, this year we’re offering the best concert and PRCA rodeo lineup in decades. To make the options even sweeter, state fair rodeo and concert tickets always include admission into the fair – no need to spend money on an entry ticket and you get to enjoy all the sights and sounds of the fair event at no additional cost! Buy your concert and rodeo tickets online now!

8. Map Out Your Day

  • Plan your visit by reviewing the fair map and schedule beforehand online or via the app. Prioritize must-see events and exhibits to maximize your time.

10. Buy a Mega Pass!

  • The Mega Pass is a fantastic deal that includes both admission to the fair and a carnival wristband offering unlimited rides for any one day of the fair. Purchase your Mega Pass NOW as this deal will only be available until Midnight on Sept. 6.

11. Arrive Early for Rodeo/Concerts and other Popular Events

  • Our rodeo/concert lineup is selling fast which means lots of people will be headed to the fair at the same time. Arrive early to avoid the rush. The same is true for general fair entry on weekends, with Saturday being an extremely busy day at the New Mexico State Fair. Head over in the morning to beat the crowds and spend extra time enjoying the day.

12. Check out GRAZE DAYS to save money on delicious fair foods

  • GRAZE DAYS are a unique opportunity to enjoy fair foods at a discounted price. On GRAZE DAYS all food vendors will offer one food item from their regular menu for just $5 from 10AM - 4 PM! Graze Days take place on both Thursdays of the New Mexico State Fair.

13. Share Food

  • The standard food portions at the fair are usually quite huge. Share with a friend or family member to sample and enjoy more items.

14. Attend a “Red, Whites & Brews” Happy Hour

  • Not only can you purchase fabulous New Mexico food products at the New Mexico Department of Agriculture’s one-of-a-kind Country Store but you can also take advantage of happy hours where you can purchase some delicious New Mexico wines and craft brews. Happy hours are made possible by the New Mexico Wine and Grape Growers Association and the New Mexico Brewers Guild.

15. Look for Free Attractions

  • Many shows, demonstrations, and exhibits are included with your admission. This includes our popular Sensory Station which offers a calm space and inclusive sensory-friendly activities for special needs fairgoers.

Keep an eye out for all the free entertainment to get the most value from your ticket.

16. Bring a Portable Charger

  • Keep your phone charged for photos, using the fair app, and staying in touch with your group by bringing a portable charger.

17. Set a Meeting Spot – and don’t forget to Tag your Tot!

  • If you’re going with a group, choose a designated meeting spot in case anyone gets separated. Most importantly, if you’re attending with kids and young family members, make sure to “tag your tot” at the New Mexico State Police TYT station!

18. Be Weather Prepared

  • New Mexico’s weather can be unpredictable. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a lightweight jacket in case the evenings turn a little chillier.

19. Take Advantage of the Photo Opportunities

  • Our state fair is full of fun, Instagram-worthy spots. Look for unique backdrops or photo ops to capture your memories. For the 21 plus crowd, that may include our new Speakeasy where you can enjoy the ambiance while sipping on an old fashioned made with local craft spirits.

20. Enjoy a Taste of the Fair Before it Even Starts!

  • Our latest batch of our new state fair brew, Ex Novo’s Barrel Racer Blonde, is already available in stores! You can take home a four pack from your local grocery store today, as well as enjoy it at all the fairgrounds bars and lounges during the fair event!

These tips should help you have a fun and stress-free time at the New Mexico State Fair! Check out all there is to do at the New Mexico State Fair on our website. We can’t wait to see you September 5 through 15 at the EXPO New Mexico fairgrounds!
